Tamkin Background
Somalia has been lacking a strong central government since the collapse of its state in 1991 after which the country’s state institutions and public administration systems were destroyed. After an eight-year transitional period (2004- 2012), Somalia entered a new chapter of its history with the formation of a permanent federal government in September 2012. Since then, the country has been in the process of building a federal parliamentary republic. The collapse of the central government in 1991 and the resulting destruction of all public institutions meant that public services are no longer provided to the poor and socially disadvantaged, something that have had an enormous negative impact on the vulnerablesections of the Somali populace. With the absence of public health and education systems, few can afford to access health and education services. Likewise, due to the lack of state support, agro-pastoral communities in rural areas are struggling to maintain their livelihoods especially with the recurrent natural disasters in the country including droughts and flooding. Also, with large IDP communities in the country, major sections of the population are living in dire conditions at IDP camps in urban areas. Over the last 25 years in which Somalia has been in the state of civil war and conflict, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) played a key role in filling the resulting gap and provided much needed social services to the people of Somalia. Tamkin Foundation for Social Services isone of the leading local NGOs which stepped up to the plate and responded to the plight of the needy people in the country. Asa Development Organization established in 2005, TamkinFoundation aims to deliver social services to Somali communities and support them to build their livelihoods. It is also one of its key objectives to contribute to peace-building and state-building in the country through civic education and public awareness programs. Since 2005, Tamkin Foundation together with its partners have been able to make significant contributions in improving the lives of the Somali people through the construction of hospitals and health centers, contributing to the provision of clean drinking water, provision of agricultural development support, providing livelihoods support, and distributing emergency relief. To fulfil its self-mandated objectives and deliver its support, TamkinFoundation organized teamswith extraordinary level and mix of technical expertise and with the capacity to deliver high impact programs
